Does mahout provides an implementation for Self Organizing Maps??
I'm currently working on a small dataset ( about 16k ratings) with only 1500 users and 9800 items. Most users do not have a rich neighbourhood and item similarity does not work either as items are rated only a couple of times. Is there any suggestion on how we can adresss this issue besides Content Based Recommendations?
In mahout, I get the impression that most of the data structures require item/element ids to be longs or ints. As Mahout is designed to scale up to huge data sets, would it be useful to also allow strings as ids, such as universally unique identifiers? Any comments?
I was wondering if anyone knows whether hierarchical clustering is implemented in Mahout. The wiki does not say anything about it. And it does not say integrated or open in the page which displays algorithms. MSc,computing Science, University of Alberta.
What version of Hadoop release is Mahout 0.4-SNAPSHOT compatible with. Where can I find this information on the wiki?
How scalable are Mahout's algorithms (clustering, classification, also recommendation) for very large datasets (>1bln points, or in other words have memory constraints)? Many thanks. -qf
[I was goggling all around but couldn't find anything definitive around this] Is Hadoop absolutely necessary to run Mahout? I have a standalone Linux server on which I am installing Mahout.
where's the source code of mahout ? The trunk is empty.

Can SVDRecommender be used on binary preference ratings for producing recommendations ?
